Thinning Hair Remedies

By James Orchard

The majority of men (estimates suggest over 65%) will have some degree of thinning hair or hair loss in their lifetime. Women also experience hair loss and thinning hair although not at such a high degree.

The market for products that claim to thicken and regrow hair is worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually. This hardly surprising given the loss of confidence that some people unfortunately experience when their hair thins.

There are various reasons why men and women get thinning hair. The main ones are a poor diet and poor blood circulation, stress and other emotional factors, a negative reaction to medication and hormonal imbalances.

The FDA has only approved two treatments that claim to be able to slow down or halt hair loss. These are Finasteride and Minoxidil respectively. They work in different ways. Minoxidil can be used by men and women, in different strengths. Finasteride is for use by men only.

Finasteride works by inhibiting the production of a hormone called Dht. Dht attacks the hair follicle and makes in shrink. Dht is produced by testosterone. Finasteride is taken in tablet form, daily. Minoxidil works by increasing the flow of blood to the hair follicle, this is believed to be able to slow down or halt further thinning and hair loss in some cases.

Hundreds if not thousands of different products and treatments claim and promise to be able to thicken hair, stop hair loss and even regrown completely new hair. The ingredients and chemicals contained in such products should seriously be considered before usage for health and safety reasons. The source of the products in question should also be considered.

Other non medical remedies to thinning hair and hair loss include the use of cosmetic hair thickening products and wigs (hairpieces).

Hairpieces or wigs have come on a lot in the past decade. The best ones are virtually undetectable even up close and blend in a seamless fashion with one's own hair. At the top end they can run into several thousand dollars in price and might require an ongoing maintenance fee.

Hair thickening products that increase density and thickness cosmetically are another remedy for thinning hair. These come in different varieties such as hair thickening sprays, shampoos, serums and conditioners as well as hair thickening microfiber products. They usually work in a manner similar to mascara does on eyelashes in that thAey add some kind of ingredient or serum to thinning hairs to give an overall thickening effect. Of course one should be fully aware of any ingredients contained in any of these before trying them. - 26691
